Get ready to feel inspired! The Bunion has just uncovered breaking news that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr (GRS ‘55, Hon. ‘59) has done even more than just graduate Boston University. Not only did he receive a PhD in Systematic Theology from BU, but did you know he was also one of the most important civil rights activists in American history?
We didn’t! It’s one thing to write a 200-page doctoral dissertation, but when we heard that he was the first president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and helped organize the 1963 March on Washington, we were absolutely shook.
We all thought he was just some ambiguously famous dude with a statue that BU tour guides like to mention with a casual smirk while walking past Marsh Chapel. Turns out, he was the Nobel Prize-winning guy who led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycott. Some people are even saying that those letters from Montgomery Jail and that “I Have a Dream” speech were all MLK!
Wow! Someone must have been paying attention in Writing-150 class! I wonder if the person who named the Martin Luther King Jr reading room in Mugar knew about all this. Such a great testament to our incredible world-renowned university.
Martin Luther King Jr, you are apparently an inspiration to us all. And wait, since when did former BU student Jason Alexander star in Seinfeld?!
