BOSTON, MA – Early in the morning on December 1, 2021, I received a text from my friend that Spotify Wrapped had been released. As I saw my listening history from the past year I started to notice a theme: sad and depressing music.
My top artists were Frank Ocean, Sufjan Stevens, and Lana Del Rey. I would list more but my therapist bills by the hour and she is currently reading my article. Much to unpack here.
I mean doesn’t everyone listen to Pink + White by Frank Ocean on repeat at 1 am or is it just me? Isn’t it normal just to casually cry when you listen to Mystery of Love by Sufjan Stevens? Or, do you not lay in bed listening to Video Games by Lana Del Rey on repeat. Nope. Just me? Cool.
I genuinely thought all this music was upbeat until people started telling me it wasn’t today. Have I been living a lie? Yes. Of course.
Starting today, I will start playing more positive music like Wobble, Cupid Shuffle, and Lip Gloss. Middle school dance playlists will be my anthem for 2022.
Better yet, I will exclusively be listening to Stars are Blind by Paris Hilton, a lyrical genius, for the rest of the year. Next year, instead of a Spotify Wrapped mine will be Paris Wrapped.
